Air quality over the Bonneville Salt Flats, just out of Nevada in Utah along I-80. This valley is so wide you can see the curvature of the Earth. I found it really hard to capture that effect with the camera I own. Most of that haze is probably the build up of about 50 miles of visible salt dust.
This image accompanies this this post about going green.
This image to demonstrates air quality in the United States as compared to the image I found today of the Great Wall of China hidden by smog. This is the haze that we put up with here in the least green country on the Greendex. This is a hazy day! I took this picture from the shore of one side of Pyramid Lake looking down the length of it. Those mountains on the far side are well over 30 miles away. The lake at the longest point is a almost 30 miles across.
I was reading information on the Greendex on National Geographic's Site that has China at #3 in the list of the greenest countries on our planet.
Of course, the United States is lowest on on the list.
Evil meat-eating, car-driving, big-housed US citizens that we are ... we are dead last on the green list. Destroying our planet we are. So, so sad.
I want to live a greener life, but this Greendex is an example of not being able to rely on science for a realistic discussion on how to do that. How could they possibly be considered an informed study without taking into account China's air quality leaves oh-so-much to be desired.
I've seen many, many images from all over China where the air quality is so bad the view ends a quarter mile out.
In contrast, the average view here where I live in the West of the USA is literally as far as the eye can see. A few hundred miles down I-80 from is a valley so wide and flat that the other side is hidden from view because the Earth curves. A few hundred miles in the other direction is Las Vegas, Nevada which is one of the most over-populated cities in our country. Vegas pretty much fills one of these big Nevadan valleys and guess what ... every single time I've been there over the last few years I could see the "entire" valley coming off the high ground and into Vegas. Here is an image of an average haze over the valley that Pyramid Lake fills a short drive from Reno.
Also, Americans are keeping cars too damn long! If we really threw everything away away without fixing it, maybe the Big Three wouldn't be so close to closing shop.
AND! The products I throw away without fixing are the cheap electronics mass-produced in CHINA that aren't built for longevity. For instance, I can't recall how many DVD players I've been through since I made the switch from VHS. I think it might be five DVD players in seven years (but I am not sure). This is a sore spot with me because last year I got a new DVD player for $150 and it is already malfunctioning. In contrast, the first VHS player my family bought was produced in the USA and lasted so long that they had invented DVDs by the time that sucker broke down.

Be Very Careful Who You Call a Narcissist If You Are a Loser in Life
By Lance Winslow
Far too many people run around calling those who exude self-confidence, narcissists. And this is happening more and more these days, but why you wonder. It's simple really, today, we are told that it is all about the collective consciousness not the individual. Well, if the individual means nothing and if you accept this nonsense, then you are going to end up with such low self-esteem that anyone with a healthy self-esteem is going to appear, at least to you as being an ego-maniac or narcissist.
In reality those who are great at what do, know their abilities and have a psyche to match, will look like narcissists or ego enthralled nuts, when in reality they are perfectly inline and balanced. For instance, if you are great and you know it, there is nothing wrong with that. If you decide not to hide the fact, that does not make you a narcissist in the classical definition, rather it just means you refuse to adopt the new social norm of nonsense.
So, if you are running around calling over achievers and great people narcissists, then you really need to look in your own mirror and ask yourself if you suffer from depression, low self esteem or are perhaps just a loser in life with no motivation, commitment or strength of character.
Indeed, if you are constantly calling people ego maniacs or narcissists, maybe this should be telling you something about yourself, rather than telling us something about those you label so readily. I hope you will consider this and your name calling for what it is. It's quite annoying to others, especially the great ones. Think on this.

I am so behind the times that I just found this YellowPages television advertisement featuring a break-up girl contemplating cutting up her ex-boyfriend with a chainsaw after she realizes that he is cheating on her. Did the nimrod that wrote that ad copy think women would identify with sociopathic, violent tendencies? Do some women really identify with that commercial?
I hope not because people who envision cutting up their ex-partner's with a chainsaw need psychiatric help.
Besides which ... it is a crime to steal a man's belongings and sell them to a pawn shop. Real world break-up girls that pawn property that doesn't belong to them are charged with a felony.
To top it all off! I saw the advertisement on FOX right around the time Bill O'Reilly was commenting about violence (Rihanna & Chris Brown's relationship) being a problem. Shame on FOX for not paying attention and selling air-time to an idiot commercial like this.

It may not be to late to have your St. Patrick's Day Obama tees in time to wear green next week if you get quick shipping. The last order I made was on the weekend, and I had the T-shirt that I ordered by Tuesday even without upgraded shipping speed. Of course, I wasn't in a hurry so I was just pleased to get my items to quickly.
Math meets coffee...it's practically perfection.
Quote from the mathematician/designer: It's a mug. It's pi. Not only the Greek letter, it's also pi written out to 200+ places in a rainbow gradient. In other words, it's pure fantasticism!!! *muchos gracias, buyers!*
Here are some interesting facts about pi. On that page you can find a link to see pi with five hundred digits of precision.

8. Phthalates (xenoestrogens)
9. Propylene glycol and butylene glycol
10. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate
11. Sunscreen chemicals like avobensone, benzphenone and PABA
I see one of my favorite chemicals to avoid on the list...
I avoid ingesting propylene glycol. You'll find plenty of people on the Internet that argue that propylene glycol is safe in cosmetics and food. They'll point you to the goverenment sites that catalog the toxicity of hazardous substances.
Hello! The whole point of those goverenment studies is that propylene glycol is a known, but unregulated hazardous substance!
Okay, so the goverenment agencies that keep an eye on the hazardous substances know that propylene glycol won't kill you today. But there is no way to quantify the results of exposure to propylene glycol over decades because it has only been a few decades that microwave ovens got food producers thinking that food sells better when it looks good in the frozen food section.
One thing is certain...
It can't hurt you to avoid those twelve substances in food and cosmetics.
